Druid was founded in Galway in 1975 by Garry Hynes, Marie Mullen and Mick Lally, the first professional Irish theatre company outside of Dublin. Druid explores ambitious theatrical projects, reimagining classics and premiering new work annually. Druid believes that audiences have a right to see first class professional theatre without having to travel long distances outside their own communities. The company has toured Ireland as well as the UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Hong Kong. Always looking for new ways to connect with audiences, Druid has presented work in municipal theatres, community halls, yards, bars and Iron Age forts, on islands and along roadsides.

The Adrian Brinkerhoff Poetry Fund of the Sidney E. Frank Foundation supported Druid’s livestream of a production of Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, as adapted by Tom Murphy. The Foundation also supports community and educational programming for Druid’s theatre productions, including DruidGregory, an outdoor production of Lady Gregory’s one-act plays performed by a company of actors and musicians. Druid also serves as producing partner for a series of poetry films created in County Galway featuring poets that reflect Ireland’s history and diversity.
