Unlocking potential
Ocean Discovery Institute (ODI) is a San Diego-based nonprofit that uses ocean science to empower young people from underserved urban communities to transform their lives, their community, and our world as science and conservation leaders.
Today, too many young people in our country are living in poverty and lacking opportunities to succeed. Glaringly absent from their lives is access to rigorous science education. As a results, kids who grow up in underserved communities, don’t think they can become scientists. Ocean Discovery Institute’s solution is simple - provide continuous science opportunities, paired with mentoring and the tools to overcome challenges and our young people unlock their potential. All programming is 100% tuition-free, takes place in and outside of the school day, and is provided along a young person’s entire development from K-career. ODI’s students are entering the STEM workforce at unprecedented rates, creating financial stability for themselves and their families while becoming leaders in science and conservation. The results of this work have resulted in national recognition through a Presidential Award and investment by the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration to scale and reach more young people nationwide.
The Sidney E. Frank Foundation has supported general operations for Ocean Discovery Institute for nearly ten years.
