A new vision for renewable energy

The City & County of San Francisco’s Departure of the Environment launched two projects to make the city more sustainable: a plan to make the city’s electricity 100% renewable by 2030, and the Zero Energy Homes project, a service to help homeowners convert their homes to renewable energy. With the Sidney E. Frank Foundation’s support, the city launched CleanPowerSF, a community choice aggregation program that offers 100% renewable energy to residential customers. CleanPowerSF buys electricity from renewable sources such as wind and solar, and delivers that electricity via PG&E’s existing infrastructure. San Francisco is also the first city in the nation to pass legislation requiring all private commercial buildings to run on 100% renewable energy, which will be fully implemented by 2030.

The San Francisco Zero Energy Homes Program was created to offer building owners options and incentives for making their buildings completely energy self-sufficient, using interactive web-based tools and financial assistance.

With the Foundation’s support, San Francisco developed alternative energy options and incentives for building owners and residents, advocated for clean energy policy, and created community partnerships to implement a new vision for renewable energy.
